cromulent

wordjournal:

adjective • fine, acceptable or normal; excellent, realistic or authentic.

Nonce form coined on The Simpsons (“Lisa The Iconoclast”). The word has gained a loose currency in linguistics to describe words that sound like a natural word in a given language. Original quote:

Mrs. Krabappel: I never heard the word embiggen until I moved to Springfield.

Ms. Hoover: I don’t know why. It’s a perfectly cromulent word.

Filial Piety: I believe ‘embiggen’ is in a lot of dictionaries now.
